Methods for Starting a Drawing

Most artists find the beginning to be the most challenging part of drawing.

It's intimidating. Where do you start? How do you start? What if you mess up?

Overthinking is easy to do and it's more pleasant to give in and never start.

But this isn't the way to learn how to draw. You have to overcome these issues and have a plan for starting.

That's what I provide for you in this lesson. Ways to start your sketches and drawings.

The beginning is actually the most fun part. Sure it can be frustrating sometimes, but this is the stage where things don't have to be accurate. You can be loose and make all kinds of mistakes, which give the sketch character and life.

Each of the methods I cover are methods I've used over the years, have come across, or have intuitively used and developed.

I use them in different ways and at different times, depending on how I'm feeling or what I'm drawing.

That's what makes drawing and art an intuitive process.

The more you practice and understand each method, the better you can automatically and intuitively go with what you feels best. If one method doesn't work, try another one. Troubleshoot. Problem-solve.

It's all part of the process.

Learn these methods and give them all a chance for your sketching and drawing practice.
